I got this at 10:33 last night – apparently the thought of cold weather was too much.

The Jury and Competition Committee of the CXC Mt Itasca SuperTour/CCSA/MW JOQ/HS/Citizen races scheduled to be held this weekend, January 19-20 in Coleraine, MN, regret to announce that the races have been cancelled due to extreme cold weather. Athletes registered for these races will receive a mailed check to refund entry fees less $5 to cover existing expenses.

Sorry, but the “it might be too cold to race in three days so we’re not even going to try” excuse doesn’t fly very well around here. The forecasts are unchanged from last night. Saturday is iffy and Sunday should be cold but legal.

Not impressed.

  1. You should come up to the Pepsi man. Sweet course with great snow right now.

  2. Forget that they just announced that they cancelled Pepsi too!

But lungs are not damaged by cold, said Kenneth W. Rundell, the director of respiratory research and the human physiology laboratory at Marywood University in Scranton, Pa. No matter how cold the air is, by the time it reaches your lungs, it is body temperature, he explained.

  5. I think there is probably a legitimate concern about skiers getting frostbite or hypothermia if the temps are cold enough. And if people are dumb and stand around after racing and sweating.

  6. According to Fox, the temp at the Packers game is well within FIS limits. And it’s being held at night.

At Rumford, they would have just shoved the thermometer into their pants until it read -4 and then fired the gun.

I totally agree. Hypothermia and frostbite are the real reasons to worry.

  8. another good (and supportive) link, despite coming from “joggers world” – particularly fun to read given the comments by the physician father of constituent xc ski racer Owen Hanley. You may remember his bro – Brian – running for us at the big green – http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-238-267-269-7442-0,00.html

frurther great stories on this topic at www.runningclubnorth.org

however, i agree with the bone-father – it is hypothermia and frostbite which are the most concerning. i would argue that tommy t went from a set of “outy” nips to “innies” from years of poor exposure and improper clothing – training in cotton polo shirts will do that for you. could have also been the whole “duct tape directly on the skin thing which may have contributed to that particular condition. i will still always tell my favorite story about my friend matt plummer – he and i traveled to do the noque together in 2001. we raced just AT or slighty below fis – min. he had the unfortunate happenstance of dumping the majority a feed on his chest, halfway through the race. upon finishing he was immediately whisked indoors and in the med-tent where a, quote “insanely hot nurse gave him a nip massage for the next 30 min”. to this day he describes it as the worst and best race experience of his life.
