The last time I was in Northern Maine was almost exactly a year ago, for Spring Series, a miserable 50k in the slush and packing up a couple years of my life. Now I’m heading back. Getting from Bend to Presque Isle (which it’s fun to joke isn’t presque to much anything) is no easy feat. It’s next to impossible to do it all flying on one ticket, and if it were, that ticket would be insanely expensive and involve a night spent in airports or on a plane. Trust me, I looked. So instead I get two solid days of travel. Today is the flying day. Redmond to Seattle to Detroit to Boston. It will be probably 14-15 hours door-to-door, which isn’t as good as I did coming back for Christmas, but I didn’t have to wake up before 4 either.

I’m actually pretty excited for the Pursuit (30k) and 50 coming up this weekend. I haven’t done too much since the aborted Birkebeiner, but I’ve been feeling pretty good skiing around this last week. And last night I had enough energy just bouncing around the house that I think I felt (at least for a little while) like Violett feels all the time. Training has been pretty light (and I’ve been working more than a fair bit), but the work’s been done and pretty much all I have left to do is make sure I’m rested and not flat. I think I’m there.

Tomorrow is driving and watching the Sprint Relay, and then racing is Friday and Sunday. The plan is to actually try and focus on the races this year (as opposed to last year, when they were definitely not the priority) and confirm the form I had in Europe. Today has been pretty easy, with the exception of the shrieking baby sitting one row back. Long way to Detroit listening to that.
