I just did my first (and likely last – I guess that would make it my only) Tumalo uphill running test of the year. It was not good. 20:52, which is 1 second slower than last July and a full 57 seconds off the end of August. I did manage to go hard (187 max/180 average), but I didn’t go fast. This reminds me of my Moosilauke test last September, when I went out and averaged 185 for not quite 40 minutes while I stumbled my way up the mountain. Today I wasn’t stumbling, but there wasn’t a lot of quick moving going on – I was just tired and flat.
So, what did I get out of it? I re-affirmed for probably the 4th or 5th time this year that when I wake up tired and have high morning HRs I’m not going to be fast. This was the first time I’ve done anything harder than moderate intervals on a tired (or “training effect” as the HRM likes to call it) day, but the result wasn’t much different. I took a couple of easy days after hard back-to-back intensity workouts in Corvallis, then wend for a longish run on Friday. I was feeling good until that run, and have been a little knocked down since.
It’s possible, perhaps likely, that I didn’t get quite recovered enough from jumping back into training off my little cold and am paying the price now. Energy management is supposed to be key for the rest of the fall/winter. Time for me to get it figured out.
