Cold and Dark

I was off the plane for just over 16 hours before I saw any natural light. We got sunrise proper this morning at 10:15 or so, were skiing by a little after 11, back to the house around 1:30, had some lunch and relaxing and now it’s basically dark. Short days up here without the sun. Welcome to Alaska.
Aside from the daylight issue, there is the temperature issue. We weren’t in a big rush to go skiing this morning because it was -10 when we woke up. According to some of the bank thermometers we might have made it up to 0, or even positive degrees, but I’m not completely certain. No matter how you look at it, it’s cold out there. The kind of cold where my jacket started freezing solid after a few minutes of chatting in the stadium at the end of skiing.
The good news out at Kincaid is that the tracks are firm. I haven’t been in solid classic tracks very many times this year, and they’re a lot more fun than shuffling along through falling snow. The bad news is the classic course is a bit of a disappointment. I was really hoping for another go at the 5k classic course that features the Lekish climbs, but it is not to be. Instead we do a lot of making little loops in and around the stadium and avoid the bigger climbs. The looping doesn’t exactly flow either. Oh well, at least the skate course is pretty legit. Of course there exists the possibility that it will be faster to classic the freestyle race, but I’m hopeful it will warm up a bit before Monday.
Anyways, it’s time for some racing, but for the moment I’ll bide my time with some Rose Bowl action and Tour-de-Ski online.
