Week 18 - Pulling the plug · Sep 2, 08:31 PM

So the plan for this week was the start of one more period focused on volume and overload (ODs) before backing off the hours and getting into more specific and harder training in late September on through the start of race season. That was the plan, up through about mid-day Friday. By that point I was starting to have serious doubts about my ability to execute a double OD weekend, and by mid-day Saturday that plan was all but scrapped. Here’s the day by day.

I'm Back · Aug 28, 08:03 PM

Last week was seriously easy on the training front. Probably too easy. I say that not because I’m worried about the volume, but because I was a little flat the first two days of this week. The goal is to get recovered, but I may have gone a little far. That wasn’t really the plan, but a lot of driving, a nasty little bout of food poisoning and the last chance to really have a social life in Oregon this fall conspired against me. Training was not the priority last week. But it was a fun week nonetheless. I trained 4 times (skate, hike, run, run) for a total of 5.25 hours. That brings the yearly total to …

Week 16 - A third done · Aug 19, 04:36 PM

Historically, August is usually the toughest month for me when it comes to the dryland season. It’s still definitely summer (nothing like some crisp fall days in September to remind me what it’s all for…), but it’s been grinding long enough that there’s nothing very novel. Roller skiing isn’t new, running isn’t new, I can definitely understand why the USST goes down to NZ.

The good news is, this year, motivating to train has been no problem. (This has been a fairly common theme for me through the year, but it’s nice to have it keep rolling along). Without further rambling, this week … going for 25 hours. And that might be my biggest week ever.

Week 15 · Aug 13, 01:41 PM

Okay! Back on track with training and with the online log. After the Ashland weekend my body was pretty beat up. I started to feel a lot better by Monday morning, but my legs didn’t really feel normal until Wednesday. Kind of a long recovery from 2 hours of effort. My sore throat continues to come and go with no real rhyme or reason, though inhaling the requisite amount of dust and smoke coupled with the dry air that is central Oregon can’t be helping it go away. But, my other than that, my body has felt really quite good this week, so I don’t see any reason to back off. Not going to make 70 hours for three weeks, but I might be able to train at that pace for the next two. That would be good enough for this period.

Better Late than Never - Week 14 · Aug 8, 02:32 PM

This is now a long ways overdue, so it’s going to be quick and dirty. I picked up a cold, or maybe just a sore throat from all the smoke in the air, and backed off training to compensate and be okay for the hill climb. It worked fine for the hill climb, but the sore throat continues to come and go. So this week (15) I’m just back to normal training, and seeing if it makes me sick, healthy or just leaves me in purgatory…

Monday: Run 1.5. VO2 Max test (~6.3 liters). 1.6 skate.

Tuesday: 2.1 DP. Cut it short for throat.

Wednesday: 1.9 Skate. Canceled OD

Thursday: 2 Skate. Skied through intervals on Awbrey. 155 Max.

Friday: 2 DP. Diamond Lake

Saturday: 2.75 Run. Mt Ashland Half Marathon. .75 Hobble/Core. Basically incapable of moving in the afternoon.

Sunday: 2.9 Classic. Mostly DP, some striding up to Crater Lake. Awesome ski.

Totals: 17.5/17.5/245.5

Testing ... · Jul 29, 03:57 PM

My first uphill TT on Tumalo Mountain yesterday, Level 1 test this morning, Max V02 test tomorrow. All this on top of the lactate field testing last Tuesday. Four tests in seven days, that’s a lot of testing. Good thing it’s an easy week with not much else going on!

Week 12 · Jul 21, 05:45 PM

A little change from Monday I have to say. I’m definitely starting to feel the training load from the last three weeks. It’s fair to say I’m starting to get a little tired, and definitely looking forward to waking up Sunday morning and going out the door for … nothing. But first, there are still three more days to tackle. Halfway through this slightly shortened week.
