A Cold Weekend · Jan 20, 04:53 PM

It was about 0 when we finished skiing today, and 0, sunny and calm felt pretty balmy. That’s because we skied in the 10 -5 range yesterday. There’s a big difference. My face was much colder yesterday than today. Classic skied both days, because skating can be too painfully slow with that much squeaking and it was nice. Been doing some training for the greatest show on snow, and I made better progress today. Yesterday I pushed fresh powder into old tracks and made it almost 10k in an hour. Today, with fresh tracks it was more like 14kph.

They’re starting the Giants-Packers playoff game right now. Green Bay is not immune from this cold snap, and the temperature is 0 there right now, with wind chills in the -20s. The field looks frosted. At least a good handful of the players out there are going with short sleeves. I can’t say I understand.

I’ve been skiing in my Craft billboard jacket the last couple of days, and it’s been kinda funny. After about an hour and a half or so at below +5, the shoulders and top of the back start to freeze. It was lined lightly with ice when I got back today, and it feels like my range of motion has gone way of the robot.

Tomorrow looks like a TT on the expected skate course for this weekend, then I’m in race mode for the rest of the trip. In case your interested, here is the weather history for Grand Rapids (about 5 miles from Mt. Itasca) for the last few days. The FIS cutoff says racing is okay once you get to -4.

  1. Oof. I hope it warms up, up there: it’s been equally cold down here in southern Minnesota. They even canceled the little 3×3k (“costume”) relay here. Good luck with the races in Wisconsin…
